Hello all Solo enthusiasts! I hope you have had an opportunity to look at the Solo II rules included in this issue of the Tonneau, and to note the schedule that is published with the rules. There are probably a few questions that you have about the rules, and the schedule. In the next couple of issues of the Tonneau, I will explain what the rules are all about, and about the events that we have lined up for this year.
Before all that, though, I would like to make you aware of the Autocross school that is being put on by MAC on April 7th and 8th. For those of you who are novices to the sport of Solo II (or Autocross as it is known), the Autocross school being put on by MAC is an excellent way to quickly "come up to speed" in a non-competitive situation.
Now...let’s take a look at the rules. The first paragraph of the rules states "All LOL sponsored events will be conducted in accordance with the SCCA National Solo 2000 Rules Book". First of all, don’t let the word "National" throw you...we are not running our events as though they were National events. "SCCA National Solo 2000 Rules Book" is simply the title of the rules book as published by Denver.
The next sentence states "Events shall be run according to the mandatory provisions in the Solo rules, 1.1". In order for us to provide insurance to the event and the participants, Denver mandates that we follow certain rules at the event. The rules that the SCCA mandates are the following: Section 1 -Definitions (defines what Solo events are) - common sense and Solo II courses, event operating rules
Section 2 - Course safety and layout
Section 3 - Vehicles and vehicle safety
Section 4 - Drivers (credentials and safety equipment)
Section 5 - Officials
In addition to the mandatory rules required by SCCA, the LOL Championship rules also states the following; "In addition, LOL Championship events will require mandatory adhereence to sections 2.7, 3.5, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5." So what are these sections? Section 2.7 states that events that have karts must be designated on the sanction. All of the LOL Championship events allow karts to compete. Section 3.5 states that adequate mufflers are required for Solo II events. Since we race inside of the city limits at some of our venues, we do not want to create excessive noise during the event. The determination of "adequacy" is left up to the event master.
Section 7.3 states that each driver shall be allowed at least three official timed runs; 7.4 outlines the rule for granting reruns; and 7.5 states that a driver must be flagged off the course as soon as possible if there is a timer failure. These, and the rest
of the mandatory rules, are rules that LOL and the sponsoring clubs have traditionally followed at our Solo II events. Two other changes to the Solo II Championship rules are that you must compete in 60% of the events "in class" to qualify for a year-end award; and that year-end awards will be given down to third place. One other "rules" type item I would like to mention is that any protest or question about the officiating or running of an event must be placed at the event and resolved before the end of the event. All protests should be made to the event master. The officials of the event will then determine the appropriate rules to apply. If the officials of the event can not decide the matter, then the resolution is left to the Solo II Chairman.
Finally, I would like to thank Richard Dickinson for volunteering to be our Comp. Board Liaison. Also, I would like to also thank the LOL Board and the Comp. Board for the support that they have given to me, and the Solo II program for 2000. Next month, we’ll go over the events scheduled for the 2000 Solo II calendar. In the meantime, if you have questions or comments, feel free to call me (507-281-2678) or send me an e-mail (tomfisk@home.com).
Tom.
