by Dick DickinsonThe 2001 LOL Region Solo II Championship Series is set:
May 20 La Crosse WI
June 2 Fairmont MN
June 3 Fairmont MN
August 5 La Crosse WI
August 11(18) Watertown SD
August 12(19) Watertown SD
September 23 La Crosse WIThere may be additions prior to May 1 if Events are scheduled. As it stands, to qualify for the Championship Series you need to run in 4 events. For points, your top 5 events count.
I want to thank the La Crosse, Basso Presto and South Dakota contingents for stepping up to events. I talked with Harvey West and they are looking for help at the Fairmont event. Give Harvey a call or drop him a line with your pledge to assist. I called Harvey to tell him of the extra interest in their event as MAC will probably list Fairmont as a points event for their MOWOG series. Plus Volksports, a Twin Cities club, is interested in competing there. Call Harvey West at 507-451-1841 and volunteer your help.
As I predicted earlier if Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) died as a place to hold events, and for this year DCTC is DEAD, there will be added interest in our venues. Expect the number of entrants at our events to rise.
The Dakota County Technical College Issue: The driving course at DCTC was built in 1995, and though adjacent to DCTC it sits on land owned by the University of Minnesota. For the last three years, amateur motor sports organizations used the facility for the purpose of driver schools, driver training sessions, and timed events. DCTC took in almost $100,000 in rentals. DCTC has informed the amateur motor sports community that they will not be allowed to rent the facility in the future. The stated reason is that the lease (administered by MNSCU for DCTC) to rent the land from the U of M, has a provision which prohibits the renting or subleasing the Driver Training Center to any organization for any reason. DCTC will miss out on $25,000 to $35,000 a year in rental fees just from the amatuer motorsports community. How much could DCTC have taken in from other government agencies or private industry? In this time, being touted as one of fiscal distress by the higher education establishment, how can DCTC and the U of MN turn down THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OF INCOME EVERY YEAR? There has to be a way. With our outstanding safety record, our National Rules, our system of Event Masters, trained, tested, and licensed Safety Stewards, and our insurance coverage which includes the facility being used, how can DCTC and the U of M let the facility stand vacant? They do not run night or weekend events. There has to be a way.
Due to work commitments, I need someone willing to attend some Comp Board meetings and Represent SoloII. Please contact me at DickinsonRacing@aol.com or 651-688-7627.
