Vintage Perspective

President VSCRVSCR is already 2 events into the racing season. We had a great winter banquet at Jax’s Cafe, complete with scariest driving stories from the attendees. Many thanks to Lee and Claire Hickey for donating the door prize; a wonderful book on the history of motor racing. The book was won by Mike Wachholz in the scariest story drawing.
Our second event was the VSCR go-kart races held at ProKart. My son Jake was chairman of the event and did a fine job of organizing the practice sessions and sprint races. We had 45 drivers participate, which I believe is a record number of drivers for any of our events. Drivin’ them karts is a whole different racin’ deal. Jake is an employee of Prokart, and he estimates that he has driven about 10,000 laps. He started dead last in one sprint that I was in, and he finished first after 6 laps. I can see a parallel here to Michael Schumacher who also started in karts.
The next VSCR event is a tour of Myron Cottrell’s engine shop on March 31. Then on April 23 we will stage the annual VSCR swap meet at Mark Brandow’s Quality Coaches.
Then we get in some track time with the first Test and Tune Day in St. Cloud. The Test and Tune Sessions are open to all cars, but you must join VSCR, $30 annual membership fee, and also pay the $40 event fee. The first Test and Tune is May 12.
I heard there is a Lola T250 Super Vee joining our ranks, more later. Keep smilin’ and keep the faith.Jeff Ingebrigtson
NEWS FOR THE MEMBERS OF AREA 5

PRO RACING: Feb 14, 2001 Carl Haas steps down as Chairman of SCCA Pro Racing. Carl has served SCCA in many positions over the years, and his contributions have been instrumental in the promotions of the Club and Pro Racing. The new Pro Racing Board will be comprised of: Tom Campbell, K.P. Jones, John Martinson, Dr. Don Panoz, Ken Patterson, Roger Werner and Peter J. Yanowitch.
CONVENTION: This was the best and most motivating convention I can remember. The National staff, National Administrators, and volunteers really put together a meaningful and interesting program. CEO Steve Johnson really has done a superb job of being exactly what this club needed, a leader who is getting our club’s name out in the public, yet is available to every member. This was the unveiling of the SCCA promo tape.
TRULY IMPRESSIVE, just wait until you see it!!!! There will be a copy sent to every R.E. I think this will help anyone trying to promote any part of our club See your SportsCar, Regional Newsletter or ask your RE for more information.
MORE SPONSORS: SCCA has announced that SUNOCO gasoline will be the Official gasoline of SCCA. This will put the SCCA logo on every SUNOCO gas pump in the country and put our membership form in every station as well.
RALLY: Television coverage for the Performance Rally program has been announced with Subaru, Hyundai, and Mitsubishi co-sponsoring this year. Subaru had the new WRX at the convention for everyone to sit in, walk around and generally drool on. The Rep. said one thousand per month were headed to the U.S. at a cost of around $23,000 per copy. If this wasn’t enough to get you thinking Subaru is our friend, try this one out. Subaru will purchase a SCCA membership for anyone buying a new WRX and wishing to join our Club.
CEO Project OZ: I’ll start this by saying that the National Office will look at any offer made to them. CEO Steve Johnson had an offer presented to him to move the national office to Topeka, KS. Why, you say would we want to do that? Well, for one thing they asked us to, and are willing to build us a new office, permanent Solo site, provide us with help from the local colleges, and provide a tax incentive to relocate. Moving to Topeka where we are wanted would make us a big fish in a small pond, which is good for Topeka and us. AGAIN - WE are JUST LOOKING!!! I’ll keep you updated.
SOLO: Upon publication in SportsCar, the newest type car approved
