Volume 101, Number 4
April 2001
How would you like to be told that you couldn’t race because your club does not have the personnel to put on an event? It might come to that. We need some help. Not just the same few people that put much of their free time into your sport. We need some new blood. We all appreciate the work these people put in. They make it possible for us to run SOLO II, RallyCross, Rally and even Club Races. Part of your pre-season prep should be to help recruit a worker or two. If we get more workers, the less work each person has to put in and that makes it more enjoyable. In turn, it makes it a lot easier to get more workers, This will help in two areas: the biggest benefit would be less worker burnout; the underlying benefit would be that LOL would become self-reliant again. Those who have been around for a while may remember a time when that was possible.
To the participants who do not understand what it takes to put on an

event, take a look around at the next event that you are participating in. Look at the number of people that are there to support your event. You have to register, and in most cases the person in registration has been at the event well before you, and has spent a fair amount of time before the event to prepare. Then we have the corner workers, pit workers, tech, timing and scoring plus the SCCA required personnel. You would be surprised at the amount of time that they devote before, during and after the event. These dedicated people do all this VOLUNTEER work for the love of motor sports. But after a while they do not get any time to enjoy themselves. It becomes too much of a chore. The best way to show your appreciation is the next time someone asks for volunteers, or for a little help, make yourself available. In many cases the job that needs to get done will not take that long, but it might give someone a much needed break, even if it is just a few minutes.
