June Sprints! Late June is time for a beautiful drive through central Wisconsin, and cool temperatures made the mid-Thursday trip a "breeze" in the Fubar hauler featuring 4 x 65 air conditioning (four open windows at 65mph). We missed an optimistic planned 9:00 a.m. departure due to typical last minute problems, but were on the road before noon. Check-in at Road America was easiest ever after we negotiated the hilly detour right by the track with Hwy 67 under construction; by 5:00 we were setting up paddock in our reserved spot near the track in the grassy North Paddock down the hill from the regular spots. The toughest part of the trip was coughing up $1.94/gallon for gas in Ripon. By early evening we were joined by the rest of the family and friends for a picnic dinner on the Siebkens veranda followed by a few drinks at the bar. Make that several drinks, as I was reminded by the Steve Thomson crew that Jaegermeister stickers would be required on the car to qualify for Friday morning practice. Steve and crew did their part to ensure sufficient quantities were available, and we were joined by Jerry Szykulski up past the midnight hour. Several rounds were bought by the now retired FF driver Dr. Don Lyddon. Both of Don’s immaculately Gib Gibson prepared Swifts were sold out west, with one now owned by
former LOL driver Tom Ballen in Arizona.
Friday morning we were up EARLY and headed for the track, when a persistant gremlin first made his presence known with the truck showing a strange reluctance to start. Despite a set of well-worn tires, I was surviving the dive-bombing FMs in the 20 minute practice when the motor first hiccuped in the carrousel and the next lap started to cough. We completed the session without losing a corner, and post session carburetor inspection showed the float level had gone way high. This must have been due to bouncing in the trailer, as I checked it earlier in the week so it was adjusted, and I made a note to start removing the float for towing. For the umpteenth time I also lost a secondary throttle return spring, so repairs were made, we grabbed some lunch at the track and headed back to town for a late afternoon 9 holes of golf at the scenic Quit Qui Och course. In preparation for early Saturday qualifying, we steered clear of the Jaeger and made it a health night.
Saturday morning featured more great weather and the truck reluctantly started for another early departure. That proved to be the high point of the morning. I was optimistic before qualifying and hoped I had made the best choice in the Goodyear tire situation. Bob Lybarger shipped me a set of slicks and I had them mounted locally before heading to the track, to save about $75 off the track pricing from Comp West. After talking to Jerry Szykulski and other competitors, it seemed the 160 front compound tires were giving everyone problems since the Mid Ohio National. I took them up to Comp West and they admitted a batch of improperly cured fronts came out of Chile,
