The annual Fairmont Autocross was held on June 17-18 (Father’s Day weekend) at the Fairmont Airport. The weather was great both days with plenty of racing. The Basso Presto Sport Car Club hosted the weekend’s events which were event numbers 3 and 4 in the LOL points series.

Winners for Saturday the 17th included Dan Wieman in Super Kart, Lee Mabee in DM, Dave Welcome in EM, Clint Tanner in CP, Chris Holter in CSP, Steve Schultz in DSP, Jared Krahler took ESP, and Kyle Botthe took first in ST. In BS, Stephan Jones (all the way from Duluth) took the honors, Tom Fisk in CS, Richard Dickinson in DS, Jeannie Eckart (a novice no less!) in FS, Matt Wieman in GS, and Mike Riecke took HS.

Winners on Sunday (the 18th) were Jason Wendlant in F125, Dan Wieman in Super Kart, Lee Mabee in DM, Chris Miller in CP, Chris Holter in CSP, Steve Schultz in DSP, Matt Wieman in ESP and Kyle Botthe in ST. That’s about it for news from the world of Solo. The soloists in the LOL series have a break until the next race in LaCrosse (dooh...West Salem!) on July 30th.
Until then...keep practicing those driving skills!

CHANGE IN LOL REGION SOLO II CHAMPIONSHIP RULES FOR 2000

At the July 6, 2000, Comp Board Meeting the SOLO II 2000 rules were amended due to the loss of the Rochester event from the schedule. The number of races which count towards the 2000 Championship was reduced from 7 to 6. This count reduction does not affect the requirement that you must compete in 60% of the events "in class" to qualify for year end awards. Any questions call Tom Fisk, SOLO II Chair, 507.281.2678, or Dick Dickinson, SOLO II Comp Board Rep 651.688.7627

seven and slid off the left side showering gravel all over, and looking like he was going to spin back across so I lifted. Sorry to say he collected it and meandered back onto the track right in front of me into turn 8, so it was more heavy braking and a slow ride through the carrousel and kink. I passed him into Canada but the preceding group of cars was already hustling up the hill. From then on it was slow progress as I worked my way past another couple Fords, but by lap 9 the lead group of Mazdas was hot on my tail. I waved one group of cars by into and out of Canada only to have about three of them crash in turn one the next time around to litter the track and bring out a waving yellow. I should have received the congeniality award the closing laps for yielding to one Mazda after another, but was still slowly closing on an older Reynard. I would have had a perfect line through turn 14 except another FM dive-bombed me in the braking area, so I did my best to tuck

behind as he headed up the hill for the checker. Unfortunately he pulled away sufficiently, allowing the Reynard to get between us for a bit of draft and my last second pass fell about 3 feet short. We wound up 19th in class, but even a successful final pass would not have gotten me the hard-charger award, as Russ Ruedesueli had moved up one more position close to the top ten in his Van Diemen.

Long time LOL competitor Dick Downs wound up leading a close race to the overall/FM win and turned the race’s fast lap just in front of Chicago’s Micky Gilbert, with Matt Downs fifth. John LaRue notched his second straight FF win as he steadily pulled clear of Brandon Dixon (DB-6) and Chuck Brewer, who for the second straight year turned fast FF lap in another Citation. Dave Hopple moved up two positions to finish 6th, but Gerry Szykulski was none too happy after a race long dice with 5th finisher Bill Kephart, to drop back to 8th. Jim Nash was in the midst of a busy group and wound up 14th. The only LOL driver listed behind me in the results was Jeff Lewis who wasn’t even there, as he has had a long battle with Primus Racing, attempting to take delivery of a 2000 Van Diemen.

We started breaking camp as former Cities driver Bill Deters dominated Race 5 with the overall and T1 win. Mark Brakke was 10th in SSB. Race 6 promised an interesting battle with a split start for FA ahead of a 50 car FC field. Pro F2000 driver Guillermo Rojas had nipped Thomson for the pole in the Sunday morning session, but early in the race both Steve and Scott Rubenzer nipped by the Mexican and started to open a narrow gap. Dave Weitzenhof trailed in 4th and appeared outclassed. At the front
