Rally ‘Round the Kids 2000
As rallies go, it was - well, unusual. There were some classic cars, a BMW roadster, a 1982 Cadillac, a Harley-Davidson, at least one ClubRally car and several more mundane vehicles. There were National Rally Champions and rookies - sometimes together in the same car. Rather than complaining about the entry fee, teams competed with one another to see who could pay the most to enter. This was Rally ‘Round the Kids 2000, a combined effort of the Minneapolis Grand Prix Association and Land O’Lakes Region to raise money for the Cancer Kids Fund and send teens with cancer to Camp Mak-a-Dream in Montana.
The teams gathered at Turn 5 of the old Grand Prix course, where Kathy Goettsch and her team smoothly registered and waivered them, collecting the pledges they’d gathered. Next they set out on a course laid out by John Parizek, visiting both downtowns, river bottoms, and a variety of suburbs before ending in Cottage Grove. On the way, they were challenged by a series of diabolical trivia questions concocted by Beryl Ann Burton and Bruce Weinman. When they reached the park at the endpoint, they enjoyed refreshments provided by Sandi Hopponen and her hospitality committee, while Kerry and Karen Freund compiled the scores. Then Sandi took center stage, handing out a bewildering array of prizes, for everything from the rustiest car to the coveted Dead Last But Finished. The top prize was two passes for Sun Country Airlines to the top fundraisers.
All in all, it was a successful event. No one got lost, everyone had a good time, and they all said they’d be back next year. Best of all, five teens coping with cancer will have a chance to go to camp - and that’s what it was all about.
Thanks to all the LOL folks who helped out, from committee members to control workers to checkout crew. And special thanks to our sponsors, Sun Country Airlines and Gunkleman’s Interiors, without whom it wouldn’t have happened.
Next year’s event is already being planned. Mark your calendar for September 29, 2001.
