Father and Son team to take on SCCA ClubRallies.
Tyler Dill (16) co-driving in his first performance rally, will join his father, Doug Dill (age withheld) to compete in the club rallies of the Ojibwe Forests ProRally, August 24-27, 2000, headquartered in Bemidji, Minnesota.
Tyler is turning 16 years old just eighteen days before the August 25, 2000 competition of the10,000 Lakes Club Rally. He is perhaps the youngest competitor in a SCCA performance rally to date. Doug is a project manager for a Twin Cities temperature control contractor and has been involved in Pro Rallies since the late ’70s, as a competitor and on organizing committees. He has been a SCCA member for 16 years. "Pro Rally is one of the most exciting forms of racing and I have been hooked for years."
The 2000 Ojibwe Forests ProRally, August 24-27, 2000 will be headquartered in Bemidji, Minnesota. The course will travel the scenic and challenging roads of the Paul Bunyan, Two Inlets, Smokey Hills, and White Earth State Forests. The roads vary from twisty, hard surfaces to flat and sandy surfaces.
The 2000 Ojibwe Forests ProRally is approximately 275 miles long with 135 stage miles, beginning on
Friday and ending at approximately 10 PM on Saturday. The 10,000 Lakes ClubRally will run on Friday as a coefficient 2 rally with 55 stage miles and approximately 135 total miles. Paul Bunyan’s Ride ClubRally on Saturday will be a coefficient 3 rally with 80 stage miles in approximately 140 total miles. The National counts toward the SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally championship and the North American Rally Championship. In addition to the ClubRallies, this year organizers will be conducting a Rally Cross on Thursday evening.
Tyler and Doug plan to run more rallies after the Ojibwe ClubRallies, but which ones have not been determined.
ex-Mike Hurst Mazda RX 7. Tyler will co-drive, despite repeated attempts to wrestle the steering wheel away from his Dad. Doug has said that, "Once Tyler proves he can drive faster than me and owns the car, then he can drive and then I’ll start co-driving again." Doug was a Central Division Co-driver Champion in 1996.
Tyler, a sophomore at Minneapolis Southwest High School, had to earn his "ride", because his parents have set prerequisites or standards he had to meet before giving the final OK for him compete. Tyler quipped, "For one, I need to have good grades and maintain them. I guess a 3.7 grade point average for my freshman year worked."
Besides school and Pro Rallies, Tyler enjoys playing soccer for Southwest High School during the school year and on traveling soccer teams during the summer and winter months.
