THE FACTS ABOUT SCCA, LOL, AND CBIR
This is an effort to quell/dispel some of the rumors that are (once again) circulating about the Colonel’s Brainerd International Raceway. This is a summary of the current (as of 7/10/01) situation at CBIR as the LOL Board of Directors understands it.
- False. CBIR is closing its doors at the end of the 2001 season.
- False. CBIR is going to become a drag-race only venue.
- False. CBIR is going to become a golf course.
- True. CBIR has failed an SCCA safety inspection.
- False. SCCA is not going to hold any more events at CBIR.
Here’s the real scoop on those last two statements: Each track that hosts SCCA events undergoes a safety certification inspection every two years. The track must be certified in order for SCCA to sanction and insure events at that venue. In the spring of 2000, SCCA inspected CBIR and issued provisional certification to the venue based on a list of improvements that needed to be made to make the track safe to race on. In the spring of 2001 (at the Jack Pine Sprints) the Safety Steward noted on his report to SCCA Club Racing that the required improvements had not been made. SCCA Club Racing then notified LOL and CBIR that they would not sanction any further events at the track until the improvements are made and the track passes inspection. They have also notified other racing insurance companies, so this may affect more organizations that just SCCA.
Ouch! That really hurts. LOL does have two more race weekends
scheduled at CBIR for 2001 and hopes to continue holding races there in the future. Since this notification, Greg Youngdahl has been on the phone to SCCA and CBIR to push for a resolution to this situation. While LOL does not condone racing at an unsafe track, we want a venue (specifically this venue) for our events. CBIR management has agreed to make improvements before our next event. (Thank you CBIR!) Therefore, LOL is preparing for our Labor Day Double Regional event as we would for any race. However, there is a possibility that the event may have to be cancelled if the track does not pass the inspection. As soon as we know whether the event will get a either a green light or a red light, we will post the news to the e-group and the web site.
In the meantime, think green!Shannon Murphy Secretary,
