Tulips and Other Fall Flowers...
by Beryl Ann Burton

LOL Board of Directors

Once again LOL’s rally weather karma held up for the eighth running of Tulips and Other Fall Flowers... a brisk tulip-style TSD rally run in Goodhue County, Minnesota. It was a beautiful day in the 50s, with bright sunshine and dry roads, as the competitors toured 90 miles of twisty gravel roads.

Ed Solstad and Gary Starr came in with 20 points to take the overall win and the Equipped class. They averaged less than 3 hundredths of a minute off perfect time at each of 7 controls. Kerry and Karen Freund, two of our most regular rally workers, in a rare competition appearance took second overall.

Rolf Strand, assisted by daughter Erica, claimed first place in the Stock class and third overall with an impressive 39 points. They were running neck and neck with the Mayhem Racing Team of Mary and Mark Utecht, swapping leads 3 times before the Utechts encountered timing problems on the last two legs. Mary Utecht took the driver’s seat in this event as she has in several RallyCrosses lately, to continue her preparation for a ClubRally debut in May.

Top honors in the Unequipped class go to Eric Hendren and Hilda Conley. They adapted a bicycle computer to the car as a measurement device, which they claimed didn’t work very well! It worked well enough to edge out Bob Carter and Pat Whitney for the class win. Third in Unequipped went to the Ericks, Nelson and Crawford, who were plagued throughout by a phantom 1 minute clock error.

LOL newbie, Walter Jaehnig, brought out mom, JoAnn DeVries, for a brisk ride in the country, competing in the Novice class. They did well until construction on the route back to the endpoint got them lost. The class was claimed by late arrivals, Patrick Munits and Michael Martin. Being the last to leave, this pair had to carry the message of the rally’s only misadventure to Control 1... Bruce Weinman, our Rallymaster, had left with Beryl Ann’s car keys in his trunk; she was stranded at the start, the Pottery Place Outlet Mall!

Special thanks to our workers, Mike Thompson and Dave Sutliff, who showed up early, kept track of their car keys and made it to all their control locations on time. Thanks too, to our heroes, Norm Johnson, Dustin Bernard and Jesse Mullins, who showed up 20 minutes after everyone (except Beryl Ann, of course) had left. They quickly assessed the situation, grabbed all of the necessary control equipment and took off to work all of Beryl Ann’s control assignments for the afternoon, leaving her free to shop at the outlet mall with a clear conscience! A good time was had by all...

THANK YOU
