President VSCRTo all the owners of historic race cars built through 1975, VSCR has immediate openings for you and your cars. Our eligibility was moved up from 1972 to 1975 this year. Personally, I hope to see some Lola T340’s back on the track. This is the Formula Ford that has the Monoposto Register scared; they beat everything. Racing slicks are still not allowed with our club, so you will need tires with a molded in tread pattern. Wings and aerodynamic devices are also not allowed.
2001? Does this mean the Swift DB-1 Formula Ford is just a couple years away from being some kind of historic car? A good question that will be moving more to the forefront as each new year passes, especially if vintage/historic racing continues to grow. And exactly what is it that causes enthusiasts to participate in vintage historic races in record numbers? If SCCA could answer that question, and put the answer to practice, club racing would have a real renaissance.
I just read an article by Art Eastman on the issue of vintage/historic eligibility year "movement" in a recent
issue of Vintage Motorsport magazine. This is regarding the HSR take over of SVRA. HSR is a vintage/Historic race promoter that has a class for just about any race car, new or old. SVRA is one of the first clubs to stage vintage events, and had tried to adhere to period correct cars and race groups. There are some strong opinions that the SVRA mission to run period correct cars will fade, and racers will substitute newer, faster, highly modified cars for the period correct slower vintage cars. No one wants to run by himself at the back. I have found the big key to fun is having a group of same speed potential cars to run with. This past season while I was running my Formula Ford, not quite fast enough to keep up with the other Fords, I found myself longing to be back in the Vee where I could run wheel to wheel, draft, and be drafted. I did run my Formcar vee twice last season, and had a great time dicing with Mike Speidel, Tim Lynch, and my son Jake. Vintage/historic racing has tried to downplay the glory of winning, and that could be part of the attraction. If you have a clean, well presented object d’art racer, you can be just as proud as the guy who comes in first, and maybe get more attention with your car to boot. You can schmooze with everyone as an equal, because everyone knows the approximate finishing order before a vintage race even starts. Everyone has their niche, and it’s a niche to be proud of, be it a well presented car, a rare car, an unusual car, a car with a great history, or something that was brought back to life from a pile of junk. The latest and best available technologies are not needed, and usually not welcome. That aspect helps keep a lid on cost. Our sport has a lot going for it. I
