Happy new year and best to all racers in 2001. I received a phone call from Steve Beck who updated me on his plans. Steve has purchased Lou Giglliotti’s 1999 Trans Am Corvette and will begin running club events early this year. Steve had been looking at GT-1 cars and the pro car sort of fell into his lap, as Steve was able to offer his FC Van Diemen as partial payment. Steve hopes to get in a number of club races including the June Sprints to shake down the machine, and plans to make the August R/A Trans Am his first pro outing. He then could start two other races (probably Houston and San Diego), and still maintain "rookie" status going into 2002. You can check out the nifty car photos on the L.G. Racing Trans Am website. Anyone wishing to lend Steve a hand can contact him at 763-497-5973.
Lots of Trans Am news on the web, including Leighton Reese heading to Epic racing to run one of their T/A Mustangs. Jim Derhaag has been busy developing the new Corvette T/A body, and drivers of these cars will be eligible for big GM contingency bucks in the coming season. Also
CBS (out of Winston Cup for the first time in five decades) has announced plans for at least three network broadcasts including Detroit, Cleveland and Sears Point, with the California race on live. Also Johnny Miller will team with multi-time champ Paul Gentilozzi driving an as yet to be determined Rocketsports marque machine.
The only other local news I have is an unconfirmed report from John Jeppeson that ’70s LOL racer Tim Bird recently passed away. I received the call when I was out of town for school, and misplaced John’s number and was unable to call him back as of this writing.

hope we can keep the faith. So what will become of the Swift DB-1’s? I anticipate that the cars from the late 70’s and 80’s will filter down to young enthusiasts with limited resources who grew up watching these cars but couldn’t afford them then, and they will band together and form a club of some kind and do what we do, go racing and just have fun. They will always be great cars, and they will always be treasured by someone. That’s how we got started. That’s what keeps us going. So keep smilin’ and keep the faith.
