The November 13 Awards Banquet almost served as the season finale for LOL motorsports, but the next day’s Rallycross was actually the last event of the century. There has been continued discussion on when we should have the banquet (contact Board of Directors or Comp Board with your suggestions). With December pretty much out due to holiday events, the options are the two weeks prior to Thanksgiving or the couple weeks between New Year’s and Super Bowl. This year’s date, falling two weeks before Thanksgiving, may have caught some normal attendees off guard and attendance was down just a bit from years before. But mid-November sometimes pushes us into rapid selection of award winners only 30 days after the RUNOFFS and final solo events while rally and rallycross is still underway. Then again if we wait until after the holidays people will either have forgotten about what happened the last season or already be starting the next. Either that or be fleeing south ahead of the winter. In comparison to a couple years earlier when we were fighting a half foot of snow heading to Jax Cafe, this year we were dodging motorcyclists and joggers in shorts. In his State of Region Address Greg Youngdahl made mention of next year’s BIR schedule. There’s a rumor that although we lost one holiday weekend (Memorial Day) it might be replaced with another (Thanksgiving), and the way things are going we may

Member response for Awards Nominations was reasonable this year although we can always use some more. I must confess that I didn’t mail in my nominations as I figured I’d be at Comp Board to do it in person, but at the last minute I was scheduled out of town and my fax missed some categories. A couple weeks before the banquet I received a call from Donna Tirpak asking if I could MC the event. In total panic I immediately phoned Jeff Gadbois to see if he could cover once again. Jeff had announced his retirement from the position a year ago, now has the famous black Swift up for sale and, unfortunately, may be cutting back his racing program to zero. However, my combination of pleading, threats and bribery were finally successful and Jeff offered his help but reiterated that this is the last time. Anyone who can serve as MC next year, or knows someone who can, please let us know.

Pat Lamon opened up the program with membership awards led by Dick Roe’s 40 years, Jim Whelan (35) and both Pat Farrell and Steve Mignone at 30 years. Only Pat was on hand to pick up his pin, but congratulations to all! Service awards included: JON BRAKKE for running our advanced driver school the past 2 years; long time Pro Rally stage captain KEN PAULSON; TODD ERICKSON for leading the Rallycross program; JOHN NIEMI for his involvement in all phases of Regional programs (plus great suspenders); STEVE BJELKE for low-key but effective assistance in all our activities; ERIK BJELKE for taking charge of the thankless task of paddock marshalling; CHRIS HEFTY for handyman efforts main-
