Vintage View

It’s mid June as I’m writing this, and what a very busy first half of our season it's been. For many of us it's been a number of weekends racing, auto-crossing and other vintage and club events. The balance of our racing season promises to be just as busy. Let's recap some of our successes so far and look forward to the balance of the season.

The Jerry Knapp Memorial SCCA Weekend saw our group start 17 on Saturday, with 14 finishing - the hard luck award goes to Brian Kennedy who lost his motor with about 20 minutes total time on it, making for a very expensive and frustrating outing. Best race lap was 1:57.656, set by Doug Karon in his Chev IROC Camaro. On Sunday, we started 16, with all cars finishing Sunday’s event. Best race lap was 2:00.420, set by Dave Andryski also driving an IROC Camaro. Many positive comments were made over the weekend about the expanding of our group to include "new" vintage cars. Let’s hope we can continue the trend and expand our racing groups into two sessions, open and closed wheel.

It was also my pleasure to talk with Billy G. about our May 27th event held at the Dakota County Technical

School. According to Billy, our event went off without a hitch. Everyone had a great time even though soaked through with "Liquid Minnesota Sunshine". We had about 28 drivers with 3 or 4 no shows; these were offset by 3 walk-ons. So if you’re planning on running any or all of the remaining events, give Billy a call before someone else does. Remaining dates are June 17, July 15, and August 12, 2000. By the way, if anyone would like to chair either the July 15th or August 12th event, please let Billy know that as well.

What’s on the horizon? For many of us it will be the Brian Redman International Challenge, July 21 - 23 at Road America - always a favorite. Then the Vintage Grand Prix Au Grattan & Summer Party on August 18 - 20 at Gingerman, followed by the Jack Pine Sprints on Labor Day weekend at Brainerd and then the Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival September 22 - 24 at Road America closing out our season. The featured marque for this event will be the "Jaguar"; look for some very interesting Jags to show up.

Anything else worth talking about? I was at a Corvette show recently where I had the pleasure of reviewing a correct replica Chevrolet Grand Sport (the 65 car driven by Jim Hall, Augie Pabst and John Cannon), finished in the authentic Mecom Blue Metallic. This car was complete and accurate including autographs above the passenger door of Zora Arkus-Duntov (the Corvette Godfather), Dr. Dick Thompson and Larry Shinoda on the dash, and running a 377 cubic inch motor, Halibrand Knock-off wheels etc. The car was sweet and has been vintage raced, competing in the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. It’s unfortunate that the current owner has no plans to continue vintage racing

ing it, but will continue showing it all season long. So if you're into "vintage Corvettes" and Grand Sports in particular, plan on attending some of the upcoming Corvette shows - if you need show dates and locations, give me a call at 612-493-8937.

The checker is out for this session.

Hello Lois,

My name is Lindsay Craig and my wife and I became brand new members of the LOL region in March.

We recently acquired a 1980 Triumph Spitfire, and have been looking forward to the rallies and events this summer.

Unfortunately, although most things with the car are great, I am having HUGE problems tuning the carburetors.

Is it possible you might know of anyone in the LOL membership that might have knowledge and time to share for an afternoon or evening?

I look forward to maintaining our car in fine fit myself, but would welcome learning from someone who has "been there" before I repeat a bunch of usual mistakes!

Many thanks for your editing The Tonneau, and for any help with finding a tuning guru. As well...how do we volunteer to help out at any events? I am very interested, and I might just be able to drag my wife along as well.

Cheers,
Lindsay Craig
