to the Vector undercarriage. A lap later Jerry Lindquist’s Citation wound up parked at the apex of turn two with a damaged rear corner, and the resultant yellow flags prevented any further fast laps for the balance of the session. Hummel’s first stop after riding back in the wrecker with his car was the Steward’s office, where he filed a protest against the out of region F500. This dragged on till almost race time, and both Hummel and the F500 were non starters. I almost joined the list, as a rushed pre-grid saw me flood the Swift on a hasty start attempt. Chris and crew almost pushed the car onto the track before it mercifully fired and the rest of the field generously neither passed me nor filed a protest against the rule-bending maneuver. Steve Thomson had qualified the former Greg Thompson Vee 3rd, but didn’t start with a similar carburetor problem.

John Miller duplicated his previous day walkaway win after setting fast time of the weekend qualifying at 1:40.9. Herb Miller looked like a cinch for second until problems cropped up which parked his FC after

9 laps. Milwaukee’s Dane Whaley had solved his Saturday noise problem in the former Jeff Lewis Van Diemen, and jumped to the FF lead with Jeff Meister in trail. The two swapped positions throughout the race with Meister seeming to take command on the last lap, only to lose it the last trip through turn 10 to hand rookie Whaley an impressive victory. Szykulski and I had gotten split away from the lead duo and at mid race I had a deja vu of Hummel’s experience in turn two, swerving to avoid a F500 as Jerry broke away. The next lap Szykulski spun off and parked at turn 8, while I abused my tired tires in futile pursuit of the leaders. I backed off on the next to last lap just before my motor suddenly cut out exiting turn 3. I parked just past turn 5 with a broken carburetor float, but the results were unchanged, as Miller had by that time passed Dan Bruggeman to finish the race and leave me third in FF. Bruce Drenth drove a heady race to best Murray in CFF while Livermore again pulled away from the Vees to win easily with Jay Dekko next.
The only other two-time weekend overall winner besides J. Miller was

Mike Brown (ITA) who topped the large Group 3 both days. Doug Sherwood got his hand-controlled GT-3 Mazda RX-7 running well to win Group 4 overall Saturday, but did not finish Sunday. Harvey West was a two-time AS winner and overall Group 4 winner Sunday. Brian Hamm won twice in T1 in his Corvette. Justin Elder beat the SRF crowd Saturday with Gary Jensen winning the final Sunday race. Bill Tapper scored a second Saturday and third Sunday in his ITS 240Z and returned to the cities to discover a serious electrical problem with his heart (not the Datsun). Fortunately, according to his sister-in-law who lives up the street, Bill is recovering nicely.

Received a quick update on the June Blackhawk National from Dave Hopple. The event was subject to occasional Sunday showers which delayed the Milwaukee CART race, but unlike the wimpy CART drivers, SCCA does it in the rain. John LaRue led all the way from the pole to win FF. Jerry Szykulski, Jim Nash and Hopple gridded 4-6 but both Jerry and Jim spun off the damp track early in the event, while Hopple moved up to record his second straight 4th place at Blackhawk.

A quick review of Mark Waggoner’s National points website revealed these other random LOL Blackhawk finishes: Jon Brakke is still campaigning his Yenko Stinger and won his second B/H GT-3 race; Steve Jondal was second for the second time in F500; Harvey West third in AS; and Chuck Snyder took 4th in FM. Steve Thomson is waiting for Steve Knapp to return to the shop and freshen his FC motor for the June Sprints. I plan to be there and will report.
