Volume 100, Number 7
July 2000
Thanks to all who helped make the Jerry Knapp Memorial event a success. I sure enjoyed the lack of traffic on the way home. Plus the weather was great.
We had 100 plus entries for Saturday and slightly less for Sunday. The only drawback was the last minute cancellation of the RallyCross that was planned for Saturday evening. The track management was concerned that the recent rain had made the grounds too soft and thought we would make a new "mudhole".
The Headwaters club rally was also a great success with quite a few more entries than expected, and there were almost 40 entries at the June 11th RallyCross. The MAC/LOL Solo II was reported to have 100 plus entries. The above success is what LOL needs to build on to ensure our survival, and if the rest of the events we have scheduled have similar successes we are on track for a great year.
There have been some concerns that the late September Club Racing event will not be able to attract enough entries to make it a success. If you read the article in the June 2000 Sports Car on high performance car clinics as part of the double regional, we are
planning to fill the holes in the schedule left by the Vintage club choosing not to be on the schedule for this weekend due to the Fall festival at Elkhart Lake being on the same weekend. If you have ever had the desire to drive your street car around the race track, or have friends or relatives that need to learn what high speed car control is, this is the event to plan to attend
Thanks Mary Mullen for all the memories and putting up with me when I was three feet tall. You will be missed.

MARY ALICE MULLEN
1921 - 2000Mary Mullen, long-time LOL member, was active in the club from 1958 through 1997, inclusive. She worked a great number of the early autocrosses, doing registration, timing, and recording of times, and truly loved working rally controls, regardless of the weather. She co-chaired the region’s annual banquet for 10 years, from approximately 1959-1969, with her husband Ade. Mary would do the paperwork and Ade would do the schmoozing.
Mary was probably best known for working T&S, which she did for 33 years for auto racing and 22 years for motorcycles.
During a six-hour race at BIR, Mary, her daughter and granddaughter were all taping - possibly the only three-generation crew to work the same event at the same time in LOL history. Mary and Ade also worked the Media Room at Road America for 13 years, including moving from the Pagoda to the new control building. She and Ade both remembered the stormy afternoons when they’d be finishing cutting stencils for the mimeo to copy the results, with Mary supervising a crew of a half-dozen women while Ade called the media who were not present at the track. Often, they could feel the Pagoda sway in the wind, and sometimes a window would blow out, but they kept working. Ade and Mary were married 46 years, and spent 47 Mother’s Days together.
