We just completed the 2001 Jack Pine Sprints and LOL honored traditions of the past sure die easy. Things started downhill last year when we lost the Memorial Day weekend, date of the Memorial Day Classic School/Regional for over 25 years. Then this year we were originally denied CBIR rental on Labor Day. We regained the date after CBIR was unable to book a monster tractor pull or some such nonsense on the holiday, but it was too late to schedule what might have been a double National event. This year’s final CenDiv National will be at Blackhawk.
Arriving early Saturday, the much loved (not) LOL Registration Trailer was nowhere to be seen, so we signed a release and were told to head for the drivers’ lounge to register. The nifty brick CBIR registration building was padlocked, as SCCA is apparently not worthy of the facility. I first tried the lounge over the rest rooms, but it wasn’t occupied, so I pushed my car into Tech, who told me to head to the tower for a Tech form. Registration was staffed by Lois Bjelke and out of region folks kind enough to make the drive, as we are unable to come up with local help. My collection of Jack Pine mugs will
stop at 14 consecutive, dating back to the first green one from 1987. Apparently we ran out of color schemes, but I drink beer more often than I carry around cold lunch so I’ll miss the mugs. One tradition that is still intact is the Saturday morning rainshower on the way to Brainerd, and I hit this year’s just past the Camp Ripley turnoff. By the time we got to the track the rain had moved east, a happy situation which would hold until mid-day Sunday, and the sun gradually broke through a low overcast. Actually, I was fortunate to have an enclosed trailer keeping the rain off the racecar. I sold my 5th wheel to Bob Youngdahl last fall, with the stipulation that I could use the rig when Bob wasn’t racing. Of course a vintage event at Road America conflicted with our race, but Bob generously allowed me the use of his Dodge diesel pickup and former Miller Bros. black trailer, so my stuff arrived nice and dry. Greg Y. also had access to the Youngdahl camper, but the weather Saturday night was so nice he opted to stay in his tent.
My rebuilt engine was fresh off an expensive run on Tom Andresen’s rebuilt dyno, so I opted to just bolt it in and run it after a quick leakdown check which was good. After a couple laps in practice I noted some smoke from the rear of the car under braking for turn 3. Initially thinking I had the brakes all wrong, I ran in more front bias, but the smoke continued so we pulled into the pits for a check. There was evidence of oil in the engine compartment, so we headed back to the paddock, where I noted a slightly loose oil line off the rocker cover which we corrected, and I thought the problem solved. As the long qualifying session approached we put
