coupled with the waving yellow allowed me to close on the duo of Jim Roberts and Jim Nash. As the rain increased, to the surprise of most the checker flew two laps early, with Lecuyer winning his second 2001 National over Joe Tovo with me a lucky 4th. Steve Jondal had his F500 running with the FF pack for the first several laps until losing the draft, but by then was far ahead of second place William Cobb. Bruce Livermore generously gave me racing room through turn 3 when I came up to lap him on the 10th circuit. This may have cost him a chance from breaking away from the Vee pack, and Bruce was nipped by Mark Richardson on the final lap for the win.

We scrambled out to turn 3 as the remaining open wheel cars took off for a pace lap with rain increasing. The race started with most cars on slicks but only Herb Miller failed to negotiate the slippery turn 3. As the rain picked up the race was flagged off to give all a chance to change tires. On the re-start Steve Thomson again had problems firing up and was left behind the pack. John Schaller was charging up only to come suddenly behind David Vande Berg’s FA on the main straight. Vande Berg had neglected to flip on his rain light, and Schaller swerved to
