Who’s new in Membership?

by Lois Bjelke

Due to circumstances beyond our control, Who's new in Membership will not appear this month. We will catch up next month.

Fubar, continued from page 6

avoid running over him and banged the wall, putting his Ralt out on the spot. Jamie Bach took the FM and overall lead and was quick to open a big gap with some nifty rain driving. Thomson was charging, only to again lose electrics, and retired leaving Colorado’s Michael Kerdes a surprised and happy FC winner with Jerry Szykulski besting Gerry Kraut for 2nd FC. Steve made up for his home-track problems winning the first Mid-Ohio National in early June to stay at the top of the CenDiv FC points. Ken DeNault was second overall and in FM but over a minute behind Bach.

Hard rain continued as the final Group 4 headed out at 4:00 for a curtailed Enduro. Despite conditions the 23 starters marked the largest grid of the day! David Volante won overall in his Honda, followed closely by Michael Brown’s VW. Mark Strohm was next in an ITB Toyota with Steve Dahl 2nd in class. Randy Van de Loo was 8th overall in the lone ITC runner, while Bill Tapper won ITS in his familiar 240Z. 3rd ITA/11th overall driver may be the first trans-gender driver in BIR history: Lilly (nee Marshall) Kirckof. I’m proud to say I was the only person to have held the titles of both Mr. and Ms. BIR, but I’m still male (I think). I have no further details on the race as by the time it was over we were packed and headed south.

Many thanks to race chair Shannon Murphy who almost single-handedly put the event together and made the best of a tough situation of personnel shortages. Another shortage that wasn’t solved by moving dates was that of drivers, with numbers barely approaching the 100 car break-even mark. A number of local FF drivers were missing due to time or financial problems. Out of town participation was again limited due to the long drive, plus always chancy spring weather concerns. The Stewards did do an admirable job running the event in tough weather conditions on Sunday. Although the CBIR staff seems to be throwing up their share of roadblocks to SCCA racing, they sure spent a bunch of money on new fencing around the road course, so they must be planning on someone running the track. Maybe next year we can land a holiday weekend double National!

A quick Comp Board update: Greg Youngdahl is looking for racer input on our Labor Day event. Greg envisions combining double Regional races with a series of short (5 lap) "sprint races" to be worked into the schedule possibly both Saturday and Sunday. The short races would award no trophies or points but just give several more competitive sessions for multi-class groups for open, closed, Spec Racer and Vintage cars. We still will have two Regional Championship events on the 3 day weekend, plus possibly an after hours solo event

on track. Please give feedback to Greg, myself or any Comp Board member. See you at the June Sprints.
