by Dick Dickinson2002 CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Here’s the deal. I am setting a time limit for next year’s SOLO sanctions. All dates must be set by February 1, 2002. All sanctions, budgets and Tonneau ads must be in and signed by March 1, 2001. This year we have five firm and two tentative dates which we will hopefully soon firm up.
I was just contacted to get a sanction through for another event for this year which is to occur in twenty-five days; and another a couple weeks later, events which I was informed have been held there for years. This is unfair in a couple of ways.I have been trying to get this year’s sanctions in since last year. If these new sanctions had been in sooner it would have given us more dates to include on the Championship series. It would have given others more opportunities to race in SCCA LOL events which we could have advertised and promoted to increase participation.
I know my summer gets carved in stone about March with graduations, weddings, vacations, reunions, and work. It’s the same for
everyone else. Getting the events lined up early will allow more people to schedule the events into their summer calendar. This will result in more participation and better events. Therefore the Championship Series for 2002 dates must be set by February 1, 2002, and the sanctions, budgets and advertisements in and done by March 1, 2001. I will consider submitting sanctions and approving budgets for events submitted after February 1, but ONLY if all I have to do is approve the budget and submit the sanction. However, those events will NOT be part of the championship series nor promoted at the Auto Show. Also, please remember that we belong to the Met Council of Sports Car Clubs and have agreed that our events will not conflict with other area club events when at all possible.
Vintage Perspective

President VSCRI don’t know about you, but my garage floor is still damn cold. In spite of the cool, wet weather we’ve had, VSCR continues to have great turnouts at its general membership events. Many thanks to Mark Brandow at Quality Coaches and Rich and Liz Stadther for hosting our April swap meet, which was
very well attended. There were even a few odd bits that changed hands, and a lot of information swapped. If you’ve ever wondered how these vintage cars are found, you should join VSCR and get "networked". New stuff turns up all the time. Sometimes it’s just a story, and sometimes it’s a whole car, and it’s all great fun.
Our next event is a test/tune up day at the St. Cloud Highway Safety Center held on May 12. You need to sign up with Bill Groschen in advance as he limits the number of cars to insure adequate track time. If you are not a member of VSCR, you first entry fee for a test/ tune up day will cover your new member dues. A good two-for-one value, and a great opportunity to shake down your car for the low $40 entry fee. We will be hosting a test/tune up day once a month through September.
Speaking of entry fees, I long for the days when I first started vintage racing, in 1984. VSCR did the warm up race at BIR for the Can-Am/Trans Am weekend. For $25 I got to race my MG, get the whole family into the track to see the pro races and camp at the track to boot. The entry fee for the SVRA vintage event at Road America this month is $400. Add that to $2 a gallon for the tow rig gas, the Seibkins bar tab, and quarter of beef at the Schwartz, and I‘m not sure how much longer I can keep up the pace. SCCA and Midwest Council look like pretty good values in comparison, same track time, and wonderful people.
Keep Smilin’ and keep the faith,
