The Y2K CenDiv racing schedule has been finalized and it’s a classic good news-bad news scenario. LOL is set up for three racing weekends at CBIR starting with a double Regional the weekend before Memorial Day, the traditional Jack Pine Labor Day event and another late September double Regional. The good news is 6 (or seven for Enduro participants) races at BIR for the summer. The bad news is, for the first time in memory, LOL will not provide a Driver’s School to assist local novice drivers getting started in the sport. Unless a rookie wants to load up for long tows in April to IRP, Waterford or Nelson Ledges, the only spring school option is May 13 at Road America. Milwaukee will host another school at Blackhawk, but it won’t be until mid August. The other bad news is the shelving of our plan for a Labor Day double National event due to opposition from other Regions. To my way of thinking, two double Regionals and a double National would be the ideal program for LOL to maximize participation.

The Driver’s School situation is partly a result of SCCA’s underwriting professional schools by allowing them to issue a full Regional license in only 3 days of driving. The catch is you need a thick wallet. For someone who wants to start on a limited budget, the cost of a pro school can easily equal what you would spend on a

full rookie season (two schools and a couple Regionals) in an IT car, with the cost of the car included. Time will tell what effect the move favoring pro schools will have on local drivers starting out in the sport.

A LOL delegation including Jim Jaworski, Jerry Szykulski, Jeff Meister, Jerrod Lindquist and Dan Bruggeman made the transatlantic journey to the early January British race car show. Jim reports that virtually every kind of open wheel car was on display from F-1 and CART machinery down to go-karts, with all kinds of manufacturers manning booths. British FF-1600 hasn’t followed the US lead of allowing Fiesta blocks and billet crankshafts built to Ford specs. They will stick with the British overhead cam Ford engine for at least another season and then look for another replacement motor. I have no word on anyone jumping in to produce a run of crankshafts, but whoever does will probably have a significant investment, which will be passed on to the consumer. Jim said all hands enjoyed the show but didn’t think much of the accommodations or food. Szykuski has sold his Vector to an East Coast racer and taken delivery of a new 2000 Van Diemen FF to join Jeff Lewis’ new machine. Both he and Meister hope to trek down to Texas for the February double National.
