A RACING EPIPHANY

by Bruce Weinman

I attended a ProRally event recently in Michigan. At the awards banquet following the event, several LOL members received awards in front of the assembled competitors, crew and workers. Steve Gingras, second in GT, took the microphone, and instead of thanking his sponsor and such, congratulated Chris Cyzyio, who beat him by a few seconds after almost twelve hours of rallying. "I drove my ASS off all day, and you beat me anyway," Steve told him for all to hear. Mark Utecht won Group 5 and commented on the close finish - 22 hundredths of a minute covered the first three places. A brand new team, Jouni and John (with unpronounceable Finnish surnames) ran their first rally ever and won their class in both ClubRally events. Fifty people they’d never met came up and shook their hands that evening - a welcome to the family.

Later, as I was talking to a couple of road racers trying rally for the first time, a strange thought occurred to me. At road races, this sort of thing just doesn’t happen. Three drivers beat one anothers brains out for a whole race in Formula Ford and a blanket could cover them all at the finish...yet they don’t get to stand up in front of the rest of us to get the recognition they deserve. Each of them wanders into an almost-deserted Driver’s Lounge, picks up his trophy and is on his way. It must often seem like nobody notices.

In Performance Rally, Road Rally and Solo, the party at the endpoint is an important part of the competition. It builds a sense of community, as well as providing a place and time for the best bench racing. Because of the scheduling constraints of road racing, the awards ceremony falls by the wayside. Maybe this is unavoidable, but it’s still worth consideration. A trophy is great, but a round of applause from your friends is better - ask Steve, or Mark, or Jouni.
