Early April is a slow time of year for sports. March madness in NCAA hoops has wrapped it up and pro basketball is still several weeks away from the playoffs. Few people (myself included) in the Twin Cities remember what pro baseball is all about, so unless you need a quick nap while watching golf, about the only worthwhile thing left to catch on the tube between lawn and garage cleanup is motor racing. Then it goes and snows in Nazareth, so the season’s second CART race is postponed until Indy 500 weekend. There’s not much happening with local motor racers I’ve talked to until the first Blackhawk National.
The only thing of note locally is the plight of LOL both in funds and in manpower. We need some more of both, specifically money to keep the Region solvent and someone to step forward and serve as race chairperson for the late September CBIR event. But if we can’t turn a reasonable profit from the May weekend, the year’s final event may go by the boards. So when you’re talking to your friends from out of Region either on the phone or at the track, put in a plug for this year’s LOL events at CBIR because we need all the help we can get.
We had a company trip scheduled for the full weekend at Ft. Worth for both the Busch (co-sponsored by "Pop Secret") and Winston Cup events. My penchant for bringing bad weather to race tracks continued. I waited until the last minute to head for the track Saturday to get behind the traffic jam. The strategy worked and I buzzed right into the track and reached the stands just after the Busch race started. Unfortunately, about 15 laps later the skies opened and serious rain began which lasted several hours. After killing time as long as I could, although efforts were being made to dry the cold (50 degrees) and damp track, I gave up and headed back to the motel in time for the tipoff of Michigan State vs. Wisconsin. They finally got the race going again at about 5:30 and made it to the finish under lights. The next day we were solidly in the middle of traffic just trying to get to Alliance Airport (about 3 miles south of the track) to pick up our other flight crew.
Alliance rose from several hundred acres of Texas prairie only a few years ago after the infusion of serious amounts of Ross Perot capital, and is now a prime corporate airport along with a major Federal Express air freight depot. Once we got to the airport we were able to sneak up some side roads to within a mile of the track where one of our non-racing fans dropped us off.
The track is a first class facility, but the road access is marginal for the 200,000 plus fans heading that way (they’re working on a new 6 lane freeway). Although we were there in plenty of time, many fans were still backed up at the entrance long
