Vintage View

President VSCR

May - where does the time go? Before we lose much more I would like to take some time to say thank you to Mark Brandow for letting us invade his Quality Coaches shop on April 8th for our swap-meet and general membership meeting, and to Liz and Rich Stadther for coordinating and setting it up for us. It was an outstanding meeting, with the weather cooperating and a large turnout of members, and a number of goodies swapping hands.

So what has been going on inside the club recently? We’ve pretty much turned the corner in recognizing that we need to recruit and grow, and in doing so, looking at including newer vintage race cars. There will be several newer race cars on the grid this May. Ideally what we would like to see is for our group to grow big enough to split our race groups - open and closed wheel.

If you haven’t reserved your entry for test days at Dakota County Tech College with Bill Groschen as of yet, give him a call anyway, he might just be able to put your car on the track. Track time is dirt cheap - $40.00 per driver, for about 3 hours of on-course testing. The dates are May 27, June 17, July 15, August 12 and September 9th.

By now most of us should have heard that SVRA has cancelled its May date at Road America. The reasons I’ve been told include too far north, usually cold and wet, and Road America has gotten a little too expensive. Also SVRA has begun aligning itself with HSR and HSR West. This could build a real powerhouse vintage-racing group.

One last thing: a comment to all of our friends at LOL, you’re invited to attend any of our general membership meetings - come see what we’re about - we have some neat stuff. The next general membership meeting will be May 17th, at Diversified Cryogenics, Inc. 153 26th Ave, SE, Minneapolis, beginning at 6:30. That’s about it for this month. See you at our next general membership meeting, and thank you for being a member in VSCR.

The checker is out for this session.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE FASTEST 3 MILES OF ROAD IN MINNESOTA?
by Norm Nelson

If you watched the Grand Prix of Minnesota on the streets of downtown Minneapolis, you’ve had a taste of what sports car road racing is all about.

The Grand Prix is gone, but road racing is alive and well in Minnesota. On three weekends this summer, cars ranging from thundering Corvettes to agile, open wheel formula racers will tackle the three challenging miles of beautiful Colonel's Brainerd International Raceway. Some of these cars are on display at the auto show.
One of America’s fastest road courses, BIR has a one-mile straight-away and ten demanding corners, with many vantage points for exciting viewing, plus on-site camping.

It’s affordable family entertainment. Plan to join us there on May 20-21, Labor Day weekend, and Sept. 23-24.

Check our web site for more details: http://www.scca-lol.org.

Fubar, continued from page 2

after the 1:00 start. This is a very fast 1.5 mile tri-oval with one primary line through the turns, so running two-wide in the corners is not advisable. Scott Pruett looked strong in the early laps until spun out by Steve Park, who doesn’t seem to be making many friends with his aggressive driving. At mid-race Dale Earnhardt Jr. made a move to the front and looked very smooth pulling away from the pack. Then a multi-car fracas took out our John Andretti car (who had already dropped down a lap), and soon afterward we were packing up to head back to Alliance. If getting into the track is tough, try getting out after the finish, as several unfortunate bottlenecks hold things up just getting off the property. So I again kept up my streak of not catching the checker at any NASCAR event, but it was still fun being there. It will be more fun when we can load up our own car and head for CBIR.

Deadline for the June
Tonneau is April 11th.
Please submit your material at the LOL Board Meeting that night or send it to Lois Bjelke.
