REport by Beryl Ann Burton

Spring has sprung, or at least the calendar says it has. My instincts tell me to pack the longies for any May events you are planning on attending. 1997 racing has started for all of us... club racing kicks off at Black Hawk Farms in April, and early May, then clean up the car, change the oil and it’s time for the Jerry Knapp Memorial at BIR. The Saturday Driver’s School has all sorts of great programs going on. In addition to the new driver’s school we always have, the Comp Board has developed and is presenting (with the help of some "PRO" instructors) an ADVANCED DRIVER’S SCHOOL for already licensed drivers. We’re excited to try something new and a little different. It’s an opportunity for track time, pointers from experienced drivers and "no pressure" learning. For new crew members, a school, too, on Friday night. FREE! It will be a great chance to break in new crew, or unsure, insecure family draftees, and have them learn what is expected of them and when, from experienced crew persons. On the social side, the second annual LOL Potluck will be held this weekend. LOL will supply the meat, pop and beer, attendees supply the rest! Bring the family favorite to share... Fudge Brownies are a must... Pat Lamon’s Potato Salad is delightful and we’re placing a request now for a double batch of Rob Woolston’s Chocolate Chip Cookies.

LOL’s PRO Rally season also kicks off in May, the 10th. Unless something happens very soon, there will still be snow deep in the woods for this one. The Headwaters Divisional PRO Rally will run about 70 miles through the Paul Bunyan Forest starting at about 8:00 p.m. Saturday night. There will be a new driver classroom session at the headquarters, the C’mon Inn, Park Rapids, at 2:30 Saturday afternoon. On-the-job training is available for workers and we’ll need quite a few. A party will follow the event at the motel, but it should still be possible to be home for Mother’s Day if the need be there...

These are only two opportunities to play during May. There is a Solo II in LaCrosse on May 18 and a road rally school on May 3rd... the worker school is April 26 and a flag making party on the 3rd as well. Come out and try something different.

Join us at the Ellingson Car Museum for the May Membership Meeting, Friday, May 16th at 7:00 p.m. The museum will be open just for LOL members and guests that evening. The regular fees there are $5 per person for a 12 month pass. You can get the annual pass for just $3 at the meeting. If you already have a pass, admission is free.

See you there. Stay warm!

For those of you who haven’t heard, young Tyler Cohn, son of Mark Cohn lost his battle with cancer this last month. Land O’Lakes Region has made a contribution to the Cancer Kids Fund as a memorial to him. For the love of this child, his father has committed to making life better for as many of the children like him as he can. His vehicle is the Grand Prix of Minnesota. Let us redouble our efforts to make this event the finest of its kind in the country, our tribute to the son and his father.
