Vintage Perspective

by Jeff Ingebritson
President VSCR

The VSCDA Vintage Festival at Road America was well-attended by VSCR members. Practice and qualifying were done in excellent weather on Saturday. From across the pond a genuine ERA Grand Prix car had come to play. I was amazed at the speed and handling ability of this car. I believe it was turning times on par with the Formula Fords. Also present in the same paddock space was the very Type 51 Bugatti Grand Prix car that Louis Cheron had driven to first place at Monaco in 1934. The real spectacles on Saturday were the current era Formula 1 cars, including a 1993 Ferrari, several Bennetons, and Lolas from the late 80’s/early 90’s. They were absolute screamers.

To say Sunday was wet might be understated. Of the 3 starters in the prewar race, the ERA won, and Mark Brandow got 3rd in his TC. The Fords, Juniors and Vees had 13 starters. I finished 9th in my Caldwell, having gotten passed by John Hertsgaard, who was 8th, in his front engine Junior. Roger

Karnopp finished a strong 3rd in his Titan Mk6. Brian Kennedy got 2nd out of 4 starters in the Trans Am race. The small bore sports cars had a respectable-sized field with 30 starters. Jeff Lumbard came in 13th with the Unipower, which is a GT40 knockoff with Mini running gear. Mal Fay posted 23rd in his 72 Midget, and Chris Larsen was 26th. Bob Youngdahl was the only VSCR starter in the big-bore sports car race, placing 3rd out of 11 starters.

MG’s were the feature marque, and had 27 starters in the all-MG race, which had a huge number of T series cars. Mark Brandow finished 8th in his A, and Mal Fay 25th in his Midget.

That pretty much ended VSCR’s "official" race season. We are planning bigger and better things for next year, so stay tuned. VSCR’s next general membership meeting is October 25 at Bill Groshen’s Diversified Cryogenics. Brian Kennedy will be assuming the Presidential duties next year.

Keep Smilin’ and Keep the Faith.
