Barbara. Vanden Bush set a new lap record working back through the field and pulled off the last lap pass on Snyder for a very narrow victory.
After lunch the Spec Racers put 13 cars out for the traditional action packed BIR drafting duel. A four car group broke away with Dave Kennedy, Gary Jensen and Gerry Kraut initially swapping the lead with Mike Gorman, up from 7th on the grid to take the point when Kraut slipped off the track on the 10th lap. Kennedy eased past Jensen on the last trip through turn 3 and got a big run on Gorman out of turn 8 to complete the race-winning pass going into turn 10, with Jensen also slipping by into second. It marked the end of a season long comeback for Kennedy, who had totally trashed his car in a big way at Blackhawk earlier in the year. The rebuild obviously went well and Dave, crew and a large contingent of well-wishers were elated with his first National win. As GT and Production racers took to the track, we were in the final stages of prep/panic and I was unable to watch much of the racing. Milwaukees Bill Paul ran away and hid from the field in his GT1 Mustang, leaving Norm Nelson to duke it out with Gerald Lamb in EP. Norm prevailed over the MG and noise meter to take second overall, after Jon Brakke retired his GT3 Corvair on the 11th lap. LOL noise readings remain a rather critical issue, as virtually every class of car seems to be registering about 1.5 db higher readings at BIR compared with any other track. The Comp Board will recommend that next season we use a revised microphone location, as the present position just past the bridge seems to be responsible for reflecting sound and resulting in higher readings.
Perhaps the less said about this years Jack Pine FF race, the better. For all but one driver, it didnt seem to
be a very happy affair. But for Dave Hopple the race was a breakthrough for him and the Piper 1600 chassis - the first National win for both parties. Dave survived the early going, and at mid-race reeled off a series of near record laps to run down and pass early race leader Jeff Meister and ultimately break the draft. Had the two cars run together they would have certainly broken the 6 year old race record held by Dennis ONeal who set it in tandem with Keith Brown on another big tailwind day. All this occurred well out of view of this writer, as the first lap I was delayed behind Ray Lecuyer who immediately suffered a misfire in his 2nd qualified Swift and retired after 4 laps. Then one of the Vectors got almost 4 wheels off at the outside going three abreast into turn 2, and I backed off and went to the inside as it looked almost certain the car would spin across the track (it didnt). On the second lap Jerry Szykulskis bid for a pass into turn 3 sent him into a spin which pretty much blocked the corner and I slowed to a crawl to slip by at the apex. Jim Nash drove off into the dirt on the outside and we both lost a ton of time. Finally, by the time we got to turn 1 on lap 3, we were met with frantically waving yellow flags and a huge cloud of dust. It wasnt till after the race that I found out that polesitter Don Lyddon had spun at the outside of turn one with Jim Roberts driving off to miss Don, losing it and doing an end for end flip when launched off a track access road. The whole race I thought the red Swift that Nash, Scott Hutchison and I were chasing was Roberts. Nash had the best run of our group of cars turning a very consistent series of laps to leave me in the dust and pass Hutchison on lap 12. A couple of 1:43s put Nash in position to take a run at Lyddon into the final turn 10, but the Swift was too wide to pass. This turned out to be the dice for second, as after the race Roberts filed a driving protest which Fubar,
