FUBAR continued from page 2

place we visit, we had put in for a waiver on the second SCCA school requirement. At the conclusion of school Chris’ instructor indicated things looked good for the waiver; but after he consulted with Chief Instructor Eric Kruger and Chief Steward Angelo Gazzola, the waiver was denied. Various reasons were cited which I considered invalid, and after cooling down a bit, later discussed with both Gazzola and Kruger. I also took issue with their actions in a detailed letter to CenDiv licensing chairman Terrance Garrett, but have yet to hear back from anyone. If memory serves me correctly, it was the same Steward Gazzola who was pivotal in Bruce Parsons’ major hassle at Blackhawk two years ago. At this point, if Chris wanted to complete his Driver School requirements with the SCCA, the closest opportunity would be Hallett in mid September. The only other option would be a pricey pro school or wait till next year. Incidents like these make me embarrassed to be associated with the club, so now what do I do with this 25 year anniversary stuff?

We were unable to take advantage of Marge Steffen’s generous offer for passes to the Road America CART event, due to a wedding that Saturday. I also had to pass on the Colonel’s generous offer for free NHRA press credentials for the same reason (just kidding folks). However I took the last week of August as vacation to attend the consecutive Kettle Morraine (Chicken) Regionals and Jack Pine Sprints. First we loaded Chris’ beater Olds with school clothes/stuff and slid it into the trailer behind the Swift and headed for Elkhart. Compared to the previous year, the turnout in both FF classes (just under 20 cars total) was weak (as it was for FV - only 7 cars!), but

SRF had well over 30 cars and IT was close to 30. It’s not too tough to figure where club racing is headed. Jerry Szykulsi, Dan Bruggeman and Scott Hutchison were other LOL FF players with CFF entries from Bruce Drenth, Alan Murray, David Grose and Steve Olson.

By the end of the weekend I finally reached the conclusion that my car has an allergy to cheeseland, but my problems were minor compared to Szykulski and Bruggeman. Dan had the overall pole Saturday but broke an axle coming out of turn five on the second race lap and coasted to a stop. Jerry had Sunday’s overall pole, but suffered from a recurring electrical gremlin which cut off all power Saturday on the pace lap and Sunday on the 4th lap, to net a DNS and DNF for his trip. On Saturday’s race, won by Cliff Drake, my car wouldn’t run in right hand corners (3rd FF). On Sunday’s, won by Steve Stadel, it wouldn’t rev above 6300 on the straight (6th). Bruce Drenth won Saturday in CFF, Scott Hutchison looked to be off to a good start on Saturday, but was bumped into a spin the first lap by Chuck Snyder’s FM in a four car brouhaha. Chuck lost both nose and wing and parked after 3 laps, while Hutch continued to 5th in FF. Murray was 6th CFF; Grose 8th and Olson DNFed. On Sunday, Snyder recovered to finish a strong 3rd (FM and overall) despite having to start from the back of the pack. Hutch was 3rd FF as Bruggeman did not start (no spare axle available) and Szykulski was parked past turn 6, Murray 5th CFF as Drenth broke a valve spring and dropped to 6th, Grose 7th and Olson 8th (all CFF).

ED NOTE: Fubar did not have the time to write up the Jack Pine Sprints for this month's edition. He has promised to have it ready for the November edition.
