In my position as SOLO Chair I receive mailings from various entities. One recently got me thinking. It is "Safety Belt", the SCCA Solo Safety Committee publication. Many of the mailings I get are scanned and tossed. This one caught my eye, and it got me thinking. The incident details were, "fell off powered bar stool in paddock." This small line in a multipage document piqued my interest. There are some hard questions going to be asked of the event master and safety steward at this event. But this got me to reading and thinking.

We compete in a relatively safe forum. There are literally thousands of events, with thousands of competitors, in thousands of vehicles each year. We become lax. Our attitude towards safety mellows. But then I read type of incident: Spin, throttle stuck, vehicle to person, car fell off jack, a lot of lost control car rolled. The two top possible causes are either Driver error or mechanical failure. Then you hit the eye opener Emergency Equipment Used: first aid kit, tow vehicle, Wrecker, Fire Bottle, Fire Truck, Ambulance. The notation on some, removed to hospital.

Each year there are serious injuries and damage to vehicles. We do not want this. Every participant has the duty and the responsibility to insure the safe conduct of an event. Press

the limits, but do it as safely as possible. If you are at an event and you see a safety or mechanical problem, notify the Event Master and/or Safety Steward. It does not have to be a big deal. Most problems are quickly resolved and the vehicle and driver continue to participate. In some cases the driver or vehicle will be disqualified. The end result is the overall safety of the event will be improved, and our safety at the event better assured. There will not be an incident report going to Denver from LOL. Be Safe out There.

PS I’m still wondering about the,"powered bar stool."

SCCA Workers Victims of Terrorist Attack

It is with extreme regret that I have been called by United Airlines who informed and confirmed to me that Linda Gronlund, F&C Chief - NNJR, and Joe DeLuca, Race Control - NNJR, two of our SCCA family, have perished on United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed near Pittsburgh as part of the terrible terrorist attacks upon the United States of America.

All the members of the SCCA family extend their condolences to the families and their friends. At the Runoffs we will have a card of condolences that we can share our feelings with the families.
