Dear Editor,

I’m currently campaigning for Director of Area 5 and would like chance to give the membership a little background on me.
Here are a few reasons why I’m running and some things I would do to make a better club which will make all of us, present and future members, proud to be part of S.C.C.A.

First of all I believe that I am the best candidate for the job or I would not run, I believe that with your help I can make a difference. I think that the membership of this area deserves a director that will always work for the overall good of the division by faithfully representing the membership's opinion regardless of his or her own. I have held most every office at the regional level along with having experience with Divisional level as the Chair of the CEN-DIV Regional Championship Series Committee and currently as Deputy Exec. Steward in Area 5 and National level as Chairman of the Improved Touring Advisory Committee and currently as a member of the National Court of Appeals. This gives me a proven record of commitment and success that the membership deserves in their Director.

I believe that we need to finish Pro Racing. The current BOD has started down a road of recovery that may really work. It was not the way I would have liked, but I believe that it was the best they could do with the options available at the time. In the long-term picture I would like us to regain complete control of Pro Racing and be the sanction body of choice for all Road Racing in the United States. I have heard many of the

rumors about the deals made to secure this agreement with what was our biggest competitors and all I can tell you is given the chance, I will take the secrets out of all of the business of SCCA.

The Solo Program has been and will continue to be the main source of new membership growth. Our Solo Events Board has been working at adjusting their programs to meet the desires of the members. It is working very well as proven by the steady growth of the Solo II Nationals in both attendance and sponsorship. I would like to see this part of our club continue to focus on programs that are designed to ensure interest from non-member car oriented people, i.e. classes for today’s little hotrods.

I believe that we can put more fun back into CLUB Racing by stopping the steady creep of category preparation levels and instituting rules stabilization. This in no way means I am interested in being easy on cheaters. I believe that you gain two to three at risk members for every cheater removed. I’m not out to stifle ingenuity or creativity, but I have little time for people who intentionally circumvent rules.

The Rally program is on the verge of regaining national and world recognition again. The Rally Board has been carefully rebuilding interest in rallying in the U.S. and next year SCCA should be highlighted as we again host rallies of international caliber. I would like to support this part of our club to insure that we stay focused on being the best and therefore the preferred sanctioning body for both competitors and sponsors.

I think that we need a small change in direction and attitude throughout the club. I think we have been so focused on serving our membership and making sure their experience is

pleasant, that we have forgotten to instill the ownership and pride in being a member that will promote volunteerism. This is a mindset that can only happen through the intangible thing called feelings. We all need to feel wanted and welcome. I think that we all could learn from the SOLO program in this area.

Question and comments should be sent to ken.patterson@cfu.net , my website kenpatterson.org or call 319-277-6333.

Sincerely,
Kenneth R. Patterson
