by Dick DickinsonThe August La Crosse event. The oppressive heat index of approximately 120 degrees did not deter the 52 entrants at the August La Crosse event. Rick Albrechtson reports everything went very smooth. The first car rolled off by 11:00 AM and all were given 5 runs. They had everything cleaned up and the trophies handed out by 5:00 PM. Rick states one of the best things about the event was their new timing system. It times four cars at a time. You don’t have to touch it and you just get the times. To align the recievers and lights you just kindof kick them into place and they work. A real improvement over the old system where you were down on your hands and knees sighting them in. The only downer for the day was a Neon which sent transmission parts through the gear case.
There is good news from La Crosse. Rick Albrechtson and the Sports Car Club of La Crosse (SCCLaC) are working with the reconstituted Chippewa Valley Sports Car Club (CVSCC) and SCCLaC will be holding a SOLO event in Eau Claire in the 2002 season. This will give the opportunity for CVSCC to see what they will need to conduct events on their own. It will also add a venue for the series, give us more exposure in the Eau Claire area, be closer to the Twin Cities and Duluth. It’s a win deal and I congratulate Rick Albrechtson and the SCCLaC for developing this renewed relationship. With 3 events for La Crosse, 1 for Eau Claire, 2 for Fairmont, and 2 for
South Dakota that would be 8, with plenty of time to add more to have a better, larger, and more varied Championship Series. Anyone who wants to hold a Twin Cities event in 2002 get working on it now. Lets have a dynamite 2002.
NOTE: The September La Crosse event is now scheduled for SEPTEMBER 16, so change your calendar.

8’s, mostly Chevrolets. Suspension modification and setup became more sophisticated, and wider, purpose-built tires began to appear. The supermodifieds even made a couple of weekday visits to the State Fair, and competed regularly at venues such as Fairmont, and also on pavement at Raceway Park and Elko, both of which are still in operation. Twin City Speedway closed in the late seventies.
Today’s modified stocks all look pretty much alike, wherever they run. Their slab-sided bodies are very practical from the standpoint of fabrication and repair, but they sure don’t have much character compared to those ’33 and ’34 Ford coupes I watched back in the fifties.

mine and not the Region’s. I have always been the strongest supporter of the Brainerd track since it re-opened shortly before I joined SCCA. Most of the safety discrepancies deal with corner-stations, and I agree track changes have put our workers in some jeopardy, but I’ve always considered CBIR one of the safest racing facilities in the country from the driver’s perspective. I would hate to see it closed to SCCA events and will do whatever I can to avoid such a situation.
